A programme of events to celebrate the 60th anniversary of The North York Moors National Park begins with an exhibition entitled ‘Inspired Landscape’.
Comprising a strong and diverse collection of work by six of the region’s leading contemporary artists, Peter Hicks, Len Tabner and William Tillyer, glass artists, Stephen Gillies and Kate Jones and photographer, Joe Cornish, it will open on 13 May.
The body of work reflects each artist’s passionate exploration of the North York Moors in this elemental part of Yorkshire
‘Magnet for artists’
Andy Wilson, Chief Executive of the National Park Authority is delighted that these six artists will be exhibiting. “The North York Moors has long been a magnet for artists.
“I am thrilled that six of our resident artists, now at the top of their respective fields, have agreed to put on this very special exhibition to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the National Park.”
The exhibition is funded through an £8,000 grant from the National Lottery through Arts Council England.
A fully illustrated book entitled ‘Inspired Landscape’ will accompany the exhibition and explores the influence this special place has on each artist’s work.
In his foreword for the book, film-maker Richard Burridge addresses the unique features of the North York Moors and the way in which the capricious, transient nature of the elements is echoed in the artists’ work. Burridge, who first came to live on the North York Moors almost thirty years ago, feels that he is now ‘firmly in the magical grip of this part of Yorkshire’s powerful gravitational field.’
He goes on to comment on ‘the particular magic of the Moors, the solace of its emptiness, the sweep of plunging vistas, the cloak of its wildness, the deep pleasures of its endlessly changing light.’
Demand will be high
During the exhibition period, The Moors National Park Centre will be hosting two key events at which the artists will be present.
The first event, ‘An audience with our artists’, on Friday 25 May at 6pm, provides an opportunity to meet and learn more about what inspires these established artists.
The second event, ‘Connected with landscape,’ takes place on Friday 8 June at 6pm and focuses on conversations between three of the exhibition’s artists: landscape photographer, Joe Cornish; landscape painter, Peter Hicks and glass designer, Kate Jones.
Tickets for these two events are priced at £10 each (to include canapés and drinks).
As it is anticipated that demand for places at both events will be high, early booking is recommended. Similarly, reservations are recommended for those wishing to a have an evening meal at the National Park Centre’s Woolly Sheep Café after each of the events.
