Thousands of snowdrop bulbs are being planted at the National Trust’s Bodnant Garden in the Conwy Valley.
More than 3000 holes are being dug across the pristine landscape of the internationally renowned Welsh garden to plant the bulbs.
The dainty winter flowering bulbs will be added to the existing collection of snowdrops on the knolls in The Park, to form and ever-extending carpet of winter white which visitors will be able to enjoy from January 2013.
It will take at least 4 staff 3 full days to complete the work, which involves digging the holes, putting in compost, planting 3 bulbs per hole and covering over with soil.
Troy Smith, Head Gardener said “It’s actually back-breaking work, but we’re really excited to be planting more bulbs to inspire visitors and encourage them to come along to enjoy the Garden during our future winter opening offer”.
Created by five generations of one family, the 32-hectare (80-acre) garden features spectactular views across Snowdonia.
Bodnant Garden welcomes over 170,000 visitors annually.
The garden is the holder of four National Collections – Embothriums, Magnolias, Camellias and Rhododendrons.
