Little Ringed Plover spotted in Wearside

Visitors to a North East England nature reserve have been rewarded with a wide selection of wading birds, thanks to the dryer than normal conditions.

Redshank, green and common sandpiper, oystercatcher and lapwing, are all taking advantage of the lowered water levels and exposed muddy margins on which to feed at Rainton Meadows, Wearside, the  headquarters of Durham Wildlife Trust.

Reserve Manager Mark Richardson said: “Part of our management is to improve the ponds for wading birds. We’ve done a lot of work over the winter to achieve this, so it’s great that we are already getting results”.

Little ringed plover have also been recorded in front of tone of the bird hides.

A Temminck’s stint, a bird that is seldom seem in the area has also been spotted.
