More than four times the expected amount of an extremely rare moth larvae were discovered during monitoring sessions at Natural England\u2019s Saltfleetby-Theddlethorpe Dunes National Nature Reserve.<\/p>\n
Moth enthusiasts gathered at the free Marsh Moth survey training day, hosted by Natural England and organised by the Butterfly Conservation Society on Tuesday 29th September 2009 to take part in recording the Priority UK Biodiversity Action Plan (BAP) species. A total of 76 larvae were found from the 12 litter piles used in the survey, with up to 17 larvae being found in one pile as opposed to the usual average of four.<\/p>\n
The event led by moth expert Dr. Paul Waring gave nature lovers a great opportunity to learn how to find, indentify and conduct surveys for this rare moth which is currently only known to inhabit two sites across the British Isles.<\/p>\n
Natural England Senior Reserve Manager Simon Cooter commented \u201cThis area\u2019s natural habitat is perfect breeding ground for the Marsh Moth and other wildlife.
