{"id":427,"date":"2009-03-14T16:26:08","date_gmt":"2009-03-14T15:26:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.naturearoundme.com\/contents1a\/?p=427"},"modified":"2009-09-06T18:07:12","modified_gmt":"2009-09-06T17:07:12","slug":"a-rare-white-violet","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.naturearoundme.com\/contents1a\/2009\/03\/a-rare-white-violet\/","title":{"rendered":"A Rare White Violet"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>From late February to May in shade at the edges of woodland or in hedgerows we can find clumps of <a title=\"More info on the Sweet Violet\" href=\"http:\/\/www.plantlife.org.uk\/uk\/plantlife-discovering-plants-grow-wild-sweet-violet.html\" target=\"_blank\">sweet violet (viola odorata).<br \/>\n <\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.naturearoundme.com\/contents1a\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/03\/viola_odorata_alba290.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-429\" title=\"viola_odorata_alba290\" src=\"http:\/\/www.naturearoundme.com\/contents1a\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/03\/viola_odorata_alba290.jpg\" alt=\"viola_odorata_alba290\" width=\"290\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a><!--more-->This is our native violet and is commonly found with it&#8217;s typical deep or pale lilac coloured flowers but occasionally a rare white version appears (viola odorata alba).<\/p>\n<p>The leaves are heart shaped and bright green, forming a carpet of ground cover with delicate flowers nodding on short, hairy, pale green stems.<\/p>\n<p>The sweet violet has a beautiful and unmistakable perfume, once prized by the Victorians and was the flower of Aphrodite, Greek goddess of love.<\/p>\n<p><br class=\"spacer_\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Historically, the Sweet Violet has a long tradition of uses, including many <a title=\"medicinal uses for the sweet violet\" href=\"http:\/\/medicinal-plants.suite101.com\/article.cfm\/the_medicinal_uses_of_violet\" target=\"_blank\">medicinal <\/a>applications.
