{"id":2130,"date":"2011-09-17T14:10:08","date_gmt":"2011-09-17T13:10:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.naturearoundme.com\/contents1a\/?p=2130"},"modified":"2011-09-17T14:10:08","modified_gmt":"2011-09-17T13:10:08","slug":"hedgehogs-rehoused-thanks-to-rhs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.naturearoundme.com\/contents1a\/2011\/09\/hedgehogs-rehoused-thanks-to-rhs\/","title":{"rendered":"Hedgehogs rehoused thanks to RHS"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>RHS Garden Hyde Hall has joined forces with the <a title=\"South Essex Wildlife\" href=\"http:\/\/southessexwildlife.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">South Essex Wildlife<\/a> Hospital to rehouse hedgehogs on its 360-acre estate near Chelmsford.<\/p>\n<p>So far six <a title=\"British Hedgehogs\" href=\"http:\/\/www.britishhedgehogs.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\">hedgehogs<\/a> &#8211; including two hand-reared hoglets and an adult who had an unfortunate meeting with a garden strimmer &#8211; have been released at the garden.<\/p>\n<p>It is hoped that more will arrive in the next few weeks, giving them time to settle in before going into hibernation.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"PTES\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ptes.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Hedgehogs<\/a> are becoming a rare sight in the UK and numbers have fallen rapidly due to factors such as a loss of natural habitat, busy roads, intensive farming practices and over-tidy gardens.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"RHS Hyde Hall\" href=\"http:\/\/www.rhs.org.uk\/gardens\/hyde-hall\" target=\"_blank\">Hyde Hall\u2019<\/a>s Biodiversity Chairman, Tim Harper said: \u201cWith numbers declining as they are, the hedgehog is under threat as a species.
