{"id":1691,"date":"2011-02-19T15:37:53","date_gmt":"2011-02-19T15:37:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.naturearoundme.com\/contents1a\/?p=1691"},"modified":"2011-02-19T15:43:45","modified_gmt":"2011-02-19T15:43:45","slug":"arctic-redpolls-arrive-in-durham","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.naturearoundme.com\/contents1a\/2011\/02\/arctic-redpolls-arrive-in-durham\/","title":{"rendered":"Arctic Redpolls arrive in Durham"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A nature reserve in Durham is celebrating after an <a title=\"Arctic Redpoll\" href=\"http:\/\/blx1.bto.org\/birdfacts\/results\/bob16640.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Arctic Redpoll<\/a> is spotted.<\/p>\n<p>The rare visitor to the UK was found at the Rainton Meadows nature reserve, near Houghton-le-Spring.<\/p>\n<p>The reserve is home to the <a title=\"Durham Wildlife Trust\" href=\"http:\/\/durhamwt.myzen.co.uk\/wp\/\" target=\"_blank\">Durham Wildlife Trust<\/a>.  Mark Richardson, Trust Reserves Manager, said: \u201cThis winter at Rainton Meadows has proven to be a bird spotters dream&#8221;.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1693\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1693\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.naturearoundme.com\/contents1a\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/redpoll_presser_feb2011.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1693\" title=\"Coues' Arctic Redpoll  - Pic Ray Scott\" src=\"http:\/\/www.naturearoundme.com\/contents1a\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/redpoll_presser_feb2011-300x250.jpg\" alt=\"Coues' Arctic Redpoll - Pic Ray Scott\" width=\"300\" height=\"250\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1693\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Coues&#39; Arctic Redpoll  - Pic Ray Scott<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Redpoll species eat tiny seeds, as well as a ride range of other plant and insect items, especially those produced by willow, birch, and alder trees, a food source that are in abundance in Rainton Meadow\u2019s young woodlands.<\/p>\n<p>This is not the first rare sighting at the reserve.  Two bitterns were also spotted recently sheltering from the harsh winter weather.<\/p>\n<p>The arctic redpoll is usually found in countries such as Finland, Norway, Sweden, and Russia.
